Flaxseed contains alpha linolenic acid ( ALA ) which converts in the body to EPA, part of the omega-3 family. The conversion is about 5-15% of ALA to EPA, but this only happens when the flaxseed is ground making it usable by your body.

You can buy flaxseed already ground or you can grind it yourself in a coffee grinder. Keep flax meal or flaxseed in the refrigerator so it will stay fresh longer. Try adding ground flaxseed to cereal, yogurt, smoothies, muffin or bread batter for an extra nutritional bonus.
