Are you hungry for lunch but don’t have time to go out? Did you forget to bring lunch with you or maybe just ran out of time this morning? Instead of visiting the vending machine or eating candy out of your desk drawer or someone else’s, consider ordering lunch online. This food trend has taken off. The National Restaurant Association expects close to 20 of restaurant customers to order online this year.

Text message orders are becoming popular too. Both Papa John’s and Pizza Hut customers can send a text message order to a central reservation number and receive a text confirmation.

Baltimore/Washington International Airport is leading the way as restaurants start to take online orders from cell phones and kiosks throughout the terminal. You order and your food can be delivered to your gate. Other airports will no doubt quickly join the trend.

Why order online? Trend trackers say orders are more accurate than those taken over the phone plus you’re not rushed. You can browse the online menu and place your order on your schedule. From a nutrition standpoint, many restaurants post nutrition information about their menu items on their website empowering you to make healthy selections. Some restaurants, like Jason’s Deli who takes online orders around the country, have information on their menu telling you what is heart healthy, vegetarian, organic, etc. Papa John’s let’s you click on their specialty pizzas and up pops the nutrition information per slice so you can compare choices. The instant information makes it easy to eat well.. Your time may be tight but you can still make wise choices.
