Alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) is an omega -3 fatty acid found in flaxseed, walnuts, canola oil, soybeans, and wheat germ. The body converts it to DHA and EPA (fatty acids found in fish) but only in modest amounts of about 5 to 15 percent. Remember that flaxseed must be ground into flaxseed meal to obtain the benefits of ALA.
